The Key to Winning the White House: Math

So the Biden campaign is casting its eyes farther afield: South, to be specific, with North Carolina as a primary target and Florida part of the mix as well. That makes North Carolina and its 16 Electoral College votes a tantalizing prospect for the Biden campaign. But if the Democrat also picked up North Carolina, he'd win, 276 electoral votes to 262 for Trump. Biden and Harris also made a rare joint appearance in North Carolina earlier this week. Former President Barack Obama did win North Carolina in 2008 – but that was a somewhat fluky situation, says North Carolina Republican operative Jonathan Felts, who worked in the George W. Bush White House, noting Obama's unusually aggressive push in the state.

The canary in the coal mine for Republicans on the issue of abortion is becoming a full symphony in this cycle's elections. In a stunning turn, a Democrat handily won an Alabama race in a blowout Tuesday night after campaigning almost entirely on reproductive rights. Marilyn Lands, a licensed mental health counselor, emerged from the special election for a state legislative seat with 62% of the vote, compared with 37% for Republican Teddy Powell. Typically with IVF, multiple embryos are created to improve the chances of conception, and unused ones can be destroyed. President Joe Biden's campaign raised $21.3 million in February – almost twice the $10.9 million Trump's campaign raised during the same period, according to filing with the Federal Election Commission. The Democratic National Committee also outraised its counterpart, with the Democratic group pulling in $16.6 million in February, compared to the $10.7 million the Republican National Committee raised in the same period. The amounts for both parties and candidates do not include money raised by outside groups or coordinated committees on behalf of each candidate. Big donors might be reluctant to contribute money to a Trump or GOP committee if they think it will go to pay Trump's private legal bills.

Biden’s Age Dominates Hur Hearing

"There has been a lot of attention paid to language in the report about the president’s memory," Hur said, addressing one of the most contentious parts of his report. For that reason, I had to consider the President’s memory and overall mental state, and how a jury likely would perceive his memory and mental state in a criminal trial." Rep. Adam Schiff, California Democrat, chided Hur for including the references to Biden's memory at all. The issue of both Biden's and Trump's mental acuity has been an ongoing issue in the 2024 campaign, although polling shows that voters have greater concerns about Biden's age. "What does that say about his mental state?"

Key Takeaways From Super Tuesday

Super Tuesday confirmed what Americans already knew: Barring a dramatic event, it's a two-person race now, with a November rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Here are some takeaways:Both Trump and Biden Lost Support to Protest Voters. In Minnesota, the "uncommitted" got 19% of the vote, attributed to unhappiness over Biden's policy toward the Gaza war. Trump, meanwhile, lost Vermont to the now-departed-from-the-race Nikki Haley and lost sizable chunks of the GOP primary electorate to the former South Carolina governor. Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff had two Democratic colleagues, Rep. Katie Porter and Rep. Barbara Lee, vying with him for the top two lines.

North Carolina Sets Up Combative Race for Governor

North Carolina voters Tuesday set up a historic – and likely combative and extremely expensive – race for governor, nominating Democrat Josh Stein and Republican Mark Robinson for what is shaping up as the most closely watched gubernatorial race of the year. With 8% of ballots counted, Stein had won 72% of the Democratic primary vote, while Robinson captured 63% of the Republican primary vote. North Carolina is a nominally red state that is nonetheless politically competitive. Robinson has called public school teachers "wicked people" and has referred to survivors of school shootings as "prosti-tots." Robinson, Cooper says, is very much like Trump, who recently called Robinson "Martin Luther King on steroids."

Trump won Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia, with results from Alaska and Utah yet to come. “If Donald Trump returns to the White House, all of this progress is at risk. President Joe Biden laid the blame for Alexei Navalny's death squarely at the feet of Russian president Vladimir Putin on Friday, saying what happened to the imprisoned opposition leader is "yet more proof of Putin's brutality." He was principled," Biden said at the White House. Navalny envisioned a different Russia – one where the rule of law is respected, and "he knew it was a cause worth fighting for – and even worth dying for," Biden said. "Make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny's death. In Munich, at an international security conference, world leaders mourned the loss of Navalny and cast accusatory eyes at Putin.

Democrats scored a big win in New York on Tuesday, and the numbers were extremely encouraging for the party. Across the country, Democrats are winning special elections and overperforming in elections they have predictably lost. And it's fueling optimism among Democrats looking at a challenging election year for both the White House and Congress. Last month, Democrats picked up a critical state House seat in Orlando, Florida – an important indicator of political mood in the I-4 corridor, home to many Hispanics. That doesn't necessarily translate into support for Biden, experts note, since the president often polls lower than Democrats running for lower office.

Biden made it clear he respected the role of a free press in a democracy and did not berate reporters in White House press conferences, nor did his administration suspend journalists’ credentials, as his predecessor’s did. But as the press has focused recently on Biden's age and memory, the president and his campaign team have become more confrontational. When Doocey asked how "bad" Biden's memory was, the president said, "My memory is so bad I let you speak." Kristi Noem on the air, "seconds after trying to criticize President Biden’s memory." 5 Takeaways From the Special Election in New York

Turnout tends to be lower, and holding an election during a February snowstorm doesn't make voting any more attractive. The fact that the seat in New York’s 3rd Congressional District was scandal-tainted by Santos means the GOP had an extra burden to motivate their voters. Republicans, meanwhile, tend to show up more on Election Day, and Nassau County Republicans have an unusually good turnout machine. Not only did Suozzi win the election, but he was winning in the Nassau County part of the district by 6 percentage points with 93% of the vote in. That margin would mark a massive shift from 2022, when Santos won the county by 10 percentage points over Democratic foe Robert Zimmerman.

Democrat Tom Suozzi flipped a New York congressional seat blue Tuesday night, narrowing the GOP's already razor-thin majority in the House and boosting the spirits of Democrats fretting about President Joe Biden's strength in the fall elections. A centrist Democrat, Suozzi was seeking to get back the job he had before he left to run, unsuccessfully, for the gubernatorial nomination in 2022. Suozzi also faced an electorate unhappy with Biden in general and, in particular, the influx of immigrants over the border. A little-known Nassau County legislator, Pilip is a registered Democrat who was running on the Republican and Conservative Party lines. Democrats also scored a big win in Pennsylvania on Tuesday night, retaining control of the state House with Jim Prokopiak's unexpectedly lopsided victory over Republican Candace Cabanas.

NATO describes the threshold as a “guideline,” and it is not a requirement that would put any nation in delinquency. The NATO charter also provides that if any NATO country is attacked, the other members will come to its aid. You can be sure that they all cheered when they heard Donald Trump and heard what he said," Biden said. For as long as I'm president, if [Russian President Vladimir] Putin attacks a NATO ally, the United States will defend every inch of NATO territory." But House Speaker Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican, has signaled he will not allow a floor vote on the bill, a measure Trump opposes.

Special elections Tuesday could provide a high-stakes assessment of how suburban voters feel about the border, abortion rights, the two leading presidential candidates and whether the House of Representatives should be led by Democrats or Republicans. In another race, to fill a vacant seat in the Pennsylvania General Assembly, Democrat Jim Prokopiak is in a close race against Republican Candace Cabanas. But it’s the New York race that has the attention of election-watchers because of its amplified importance in the closely divided House of Representatives. Should Democrats prevail in the toss-up election, they'll flip the seat held by Santos and give themselves some momentum heading into November. Pilip has cast Suozzi as weak on border security, a powerful issue in a state where migrants have been transported after coming over the southern border.

With 1% of the vote in, the Associated Press called the race for Trump, who had 98% of the vote, his most lopsided victory to date. The feat was made easier by the fact that his only competition was a nominal opponent who doesn't even register in GOP primary polling. Nikki Haley, wasn't on the ballot for Thursday's caucuses, instead opting to compete earlier this week in a primary where no delegates were awarded. Trump's only competition Thursday was Texas businessman and pastor Ryan Binkley, who had 2% of the vote when Trump was declared the winner. But it was a signal to Haley that a substantial chunk of Nevada Republicans wanted her out of the race to clear the path for Trump.

Biden: ‘How in the Hell Dare He?’

"There's some attention paid to some language in the report about my recollection of events," Biden said in a hastily called news conference at the White House. How in the hell dare he raise that?” Biden said, turning emotional as he often does when he speaks of Beau Biden, who died of a brian tumor in 2015. The report said Biden would not be charged, noting there was not sufficient evidence to prove he had willfully intended to retain the documents. The report was written by special counsel Robert Hur, a Trump appointee brought in by Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Biden in this case. Before the unredacted report was released, Biden lawyer Robert Bauer sent a scathing letter to Hur on the personal comments about Biden.

The unredacted report found that Biden carelessly handled classified materials after he left the vice presidency, even sharing classified materials with the ghostwriter for his autobiography. But the report by special counsel Robert K. Hur recommended that Biden not be prosecuted, since the evidence was not powerful enough to charge him. It was that headline Biden himself seized on Wednesday afternoon as he rallied fellow Democrats at their retreat in Leesburg, Virginia. "I was especially pleased to see the special counsel make clear the stark differences in this case and Donald Trump," Biden added, referring to the 40 -count indictment against the former president. Trump is facing serious legal consequences because of his classified documents case, but Biden may face serious political damage from the special counsel's report on his handling of classified materials.

Donald Trump. "It's time for Republicans in the Congress to show a little courage, to show a little spine ... to make it clear to the American people that they work for them," Biden added, pleading for passage of a bill Republicans had warmed to until Trump campaigned for its defeat. With the economy strong and inflation stabilizing, Republicans have shifted their attacks on Biden to the border problem, an issue that could be especially damaging to Biden in battleground states like Arizona. House Speaker Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican, declared the bipartisan Senate bill "dead on arrival." Once the GOP-run House signaled it would not even consider the package, Senate Republicans started to jump ship, making it unclear whether the upper chamber would even consider the package their own members negotiated on a bipartisan basis.

South Carolina's primary was the first official nominating contest for Democrats, who – egged on by Biden – moved the state up in the primary schedule. But buoyed by Black voters – especially Black women – Biden earned nearly half of the primary vote in South Carolina in a five-way race, propelling him ultimately to the Democratic nomination. Despite the expected primary victory in South Carolina, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made a concerted effort to campaign there, visiting the Palmetto State the last two weekends. Harris also visited South Carolina three times since the beginning of the year, speaking at college campuses about student debt relief and abortion rights. Further, 76.5% of the early vote was made up of Black voters, 13% higher than in 2020, he added.

The results will either buttress Trump's claims of massive wealth or expose him as a poseur. The biggest potential judgment comes in the civil fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The court has already determined that Trump committed fraud by securing loans through false financial statements – including inflating the value of his properties. The fraud case is more complicated, experts say, since there was no clear victim identified. Judge Arthur Engoron, who will deliver the judgment on financial damages as well as the fate of Trump's businesses in New York, hasn't been sympathetic to the idea that Trump's fraud caused no harm.

Biden Reaches Decision on Response to Drone Attack

President Joe Biden has made a decision on how he wants to respond to the drone attack that killed three U.S. troops in Jordan over the weekend. Biden is under pressure to respond forcefully to the attack, which the United States believes was done by Iran-backed militants. But Biden must also balance the desire for a definitive – and perhaps sustained – response without drawing the United States into a broader war in an increasingly tense and violent Middle East. Biden said he did hold Iran responsible for the attack "in the sense that they're supplying the weapons to the people who did it." White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said he would not "telegraph any punches" the United States plans in response to the drone attack.
